The Natural History Museum was first opened in 1881. It contained collections that had originally been part of the British Museum including collections of Sir Hans Sloane, a physician and collector of natural curiosities, and Joseph Banks the botanist who travelled with Captain James Cook aboard HMS Endeavour, 1768-1771. John Clegg (1909-1998) was born in Ormskirk in Lancashire 7th April 1909. In the second world war he became a squadron leader, eventually in command of a photographic service experience in Ceylon and Singapore.
